An FSRW numerical simplification approach for vehicle frontal crashworthiness analysis

Vehicle frontal crashworthiness analysis is an important topic in the field automotive community, as it relates to legislative requirements. Frontal crash models contain a large number of elements and therefore present high computational cost, especially when performing structural performance optimisations. A new numerical methodology proposed this paper with aim increase computation speed by implementing sub-modelling approach on structure-rear wheels (FSRW) method. In method, vehicle body structure behind rear seats replaced point mass, equivalent mass removed, attached frame front its wheels. This method was rigorously tested against validated full size computer different classes provided NHTSA, included MPV, SUV, van, sedan, fixed rigid barrier (FRB), small overlap mobile progressive deformable (MPDB) tests. The research has demonstrated that correlated all NHTSA deformations, intrusions, velocities, accelerations, well providing runtime average reduction between 7% 23%. simplified which can be easily implemented, innovative will have impact design, allow easier use optimisation techniques, lead safer vehicles.
